The course aims to help you build professional skills required by Learning Support Educators to assist and support the teacher in the general classroom. The programme equips you with the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to support teachers in creating an effective classroom experience for all students. The programme will focus on knowledge and skills to be able to support individuals with mild to severe disabilities, mild to severe learning difficulties and mild to severe challenging behaviour and the prevention thereof. It also aims to improve the competencies, skills, effectiveness and confidence that learning support educators seek to bring to your work.

The course is designed to allow you to develop an understanding of the curriculum, education policy, principles of education, knowledge of the challenges met in classrooms when supporting learning of children with learning difficulties and the implementation of positive behavioural approaches.

Communication and Academic Skills Programme

The communication and academic skills programme complements students’ main course of study. It introduces them to writing and presenting as situated within academic contexts sensitive to specific disciplines and develops their competences for future careers.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2019 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Facilitating Inclusive Education - B.A. (Hons) - under the auspices of the Faculty of Education.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Define your role as a Learning Support Educator.
  • List your responsibilities within the transdisciplinary team to ensure learning for all students within an inclusive classroom.
  • Identify specific skills and appropriate teaching strategies that a LSE can use to provide effective support to contribute to productive teamwork.
  • Demonstrate a sense of self-direction through the completion of assigned tasks.
  • Plan according to the diverse needs of the children.
  • Use augmentative and alternative technologies to support learning.

  1. Subject Knowledge and Understanding
    1. define your role as Learning Support Educators;
    2. list your responsibilities within the transdisciplinary team to ensure learning for all students within an inclusive classroom;
    3. locate and describe the diverse roles and distinctive contribution of the Learning Support Educator;
    4. identify specific characteristics of high incidence disabilities;
    5. identify specific characteristics of low incidence disabilities;
    6. identify specific skills and appropriate teaching strategies that a LSE can use to provide effective support to contribute to productive teamwork;
    7. describe different characteristics of a child's typical development;
    8. define inclusive practice;
    9. describe the value of diversity in the child's socio-emotional development;
    10. Implement positive school-based behaviour approaches.

As a graduate of Facilitative inclusive Education, you will have the necessary skills to work as learning support educators (LSEs) at the graduate level (LSE 3). You can also apply to become an Inclusion Coordinator (INCOs). If you are interested in pursuing an academic career or to further your studies, we encourage you to enrol to Masters level in various related areas.
